Abstract

This panel contains papers that analyze economic and democratic consequences of local government amalgamation reforms in specific countries as well as comparatively. Additionally, the panel contains papers that study the relationship between amalgamation and other strategies for increasing the capacity of fragmented local government systems, including inter-municipal cooperative arrangements, regionalization, task differentiation and increased levels of state supervision.
