Abstract

Local politics is a specific power arena that differs in various aspects from national politics. Compared to more ideologically based national elections, local elections concentrate more on local and municipality-specific issues and the performance of the incumbents. In this panel the papers present studies of local elections, and the impact of local political competition on turnout at the local elections. Other papers illuminate local election turnout in amalgamated municipalities and the vertical and horizontal spill-over in regional elections and their impact on multilevel democracy.
