Which types of courses are on offer at the ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques?

The Summer School programme consists of three-day Intensive Refresher courses (15 teaching hours / five hours per day) 23, 24 and 25 July, followed by four types of one-week or two-week courses, as detailed below (15 teaching hours over five days or 30 hours over 10 days) between 27 July to 7 August. Please note, two-week courses have an optional exam for ECTS credits on the morning of Saturday 8 August.

Short Intensive Refresher courses: There are seven Intensive Refresher courses offering tools that will be useful for further courses. Typically, software training, before taking a data analysis course.

Main courses

Research design/fundamentals course: An ‘upstream’ course enabling you to think about your research more broadly, so you can make more informed choices about specific methods/techniques.

Data collection/generation course: A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data collection or generation.

Data analysis course (introductory): A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data analysis, bringing you to a level of well-informed use.

Data analysis course (advanced): A hands-on course focused on a specific method (or family of methods) for data analysis, bringing you to an expert level, including more recent refinements.

Is there a limit to the number of courses I can take at the SSMT?

You can choose from the following course / combinations:

  • 3 day short Intensive Refresher course
  • Week-one or week-two course
  • Week-one and week-two course 
  • Two-week course
  • You can also combine a Refresher course with a week-one, week-two or two-week course (a package). Course packages offer a discounted rate compared to booking individually.

When do I need to pay my course fees?

Within 15 working days of your registration. Registrations after 29 May 2015 will require full payment within 24 hours via credit or debit card from the ECPR website. Please note that your place on the course will not be guaranteed until payment has been received in full. Please allow extra time for this if you are paying by bank transfer. Your payment due date is stated on your invoice, which you can access via your MyECPR account My Invoices. You can also pay directly by credit or debit card directly from the website. Full details of course fees and payment can be found on the course fee page.

Does the course fee include accommodation?

The fee is for the course(s) only. We have negotiated special deals for SSMT participants. Please see the Accommodation Information page.

When should I book my travel?

Please do not book travel or accommodation until you have been notified by ECPR that your course(s) are confirmed. This happens as soon as the course reaches a sufficient number of registered and paid participants.  The deadline for courses to be confirmed is 8 June 2015.

Once I have paid will I receive confirmation of my registration?

Yes, we will send you a confirmation by email to the email address used for your registration. If you have more than one ECPR profile please make a note of the email address used when logging in to register. It greatly helps the ECPR if you only have one ECPR account.

When is the deadline for registration?

Midnight on Thursday 25 June 2015. You can still register after 25 June but we cannot guarantee you will be given a place on the course you are interested in as it may be fully booked. Registrations after 25 June 2015 require full payment within 24 hours via credit or debit card through the ECPR website.

Is there a waiting list for fully-booked courses?

Yes. You will be notified on a first come, first served basis if a place becomes available. To be placed on a waiting list, please email methodsschool@ecpr.eu.

When will I receive the reading material?

Reading material for the course is detailed in the course outline. Some reading material will be uploaded onto the online platform, Moodle from mid-June 2015, however you will need to purchase or source the remainder yourself.  You may wish to clarify the specifics for your course with your Instructor.

I have already registered but would like to change my course selection. What should I do?

You can change courses if there is a space available but this will incur a €25 administration charge. Changes can only be made by the Summer School co-ordinators, please email methodsschool@ecpr.eu

Will I receive a certificate of attendance?

Yes. Provided you attend 80% of the course hours, you will be given a certificate of attendance for each course attended. You can collect your certificate on the last day of your course or the certificate will be emailed to you after the Summer School.

Refresher courses start at 10:00 Thursday 23 July and finish on Saturday 25 July 17:00 and Main courses finish Friday 31 July or 7 August 17:30. Please note, two-week courses have an optional exam for ECTS credits, on the morning of Saturday 8 August.

A detailed course timetable will be issued in January. Once all of the courses have been confirmed no later than 8 June 2015, the academic timetable will be published on Moodle, where you can check if your course finishes earlier. Please note, even if Instructors have indicated a time preferences in their course outline, the ECPR cannot guarantee courses will take place at these times until the official timetable is published.

Where will the ECPR Summer School take place?

The 2015 Summer School will be hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana, Kardeljeva ploscad 5, 1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia. All classes and labs are located at the Faculty, which is easily reached from the city centre by bus no 6-Crnuce, no 8-Brnciceva and 11-Jezica. Get off the bus at Mercator. Maps and directions are on the website and will be uploaded to Moodle.

How will participants be accommodated?

We ask participants to organise their own accommodation, see the Accommodation Information page. However, based on positive feedback from 2014 we have made special arrangements with two hotels: Dormitory Dijaski Dom Bezigrad and Hotel Park, please see the quick links on the Summer School home page.

Will I have internet access at the University?

The Eduroam service provides users with secure access to the wireless network of their own organisation and to hosting networks of other institutions in the Eduroam network. You can access the Eduroam network in Ljubljana free of charge using the same username and password as for your home Eduroam network.
