Target Audience

Bologna Doctoral and Bologna Master students belonging to different disciplinary backgrounds in the social and political sciences.



Objectives

The Summer School will focus upon the study of grassroots and participatory democratic practices and will aim at disseminating knowledge on how to investigate processes and mechanisms that sustain the active citizens' participation to and mobilization in the realm of politics.

The main objectives of the Summer School are to create an interactive learning environment where graduate students and other scholars will:

  • Learn the basic features of a number of methods employed in the social and political sciences to study participation and mobilization
  • Develop the skills to include mixed method approaches and methodological pluralims in their own research
  • Present their ongoing research projects receiving feedbacks from leading scholars in the field
  • Network with junior and senior scholars in the field of participation and mobilization 


Courses

The Summer School will revolve around 3 keynote speeches and 7 methods classes. The Summer School will last 10 teaching days for a total of 57 hours of didactical activities and 7 hours of individual face-to-face contact between instructors and students divided into:
  • Day 1, 5, 10: 3 morning lectures in which keynote speakers will address the general themes of the Summer School and will engage in discussions with students (session length 2 hours).
  • Day 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9: 7 morning intensive methods sessions in which instructors will teach students how to apply some key research methods in the social and political sciences to the study of participation and mobilization (session length 3 hours);
  • From day 1 to day 10: 10 afternoon sessions devoted to the presentation and discussion of students' research papers, with a focus on theoretical and methodological aspects concerning the study of grassroots participation and radical democracy (session length 3 hours).
  • On day 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, and 9 methods instructors will be available for 1 hour to meet students individually, under appointment.
